Eco
At Magnetic Island Jet Skis, we understand the critical role we play in protecting Magnetic Island’s National and Marine Parks. Our activities blend sharing the island lifestyle, educating visitors about its unique flora and fauna, and demonstrating responsible behaviour within the parks. We’re certified through Ecotourism Australia’s world-leading ecotourism certification program, which means that when you travel with us, you’re supporting a business committed to sustainable practices and high-quality nature-based tourism experiences. We prioritise eco-friendly operations, using fuel-efficient jet skis and regularly maintaining our fleet to minimise emissions. Our guided tours respect local wildlife and marine ecosystems, ensuring a safe and sustainable experience for both guests and the environment. Additionally, we actively engage in local conservation efforts, promoting awareness and education to help protect the unique habitats that make Magnetic Island so special.
Our certification demonstrates our commitment to:
Looking After Our Natural Environment:
We use Jet Skis with ultra-low emissions
Jet Skis have no underwater running gear, such as propellers or rudders, to prevent harm to marine life.
Our Jet Skis produce minimal wash and wake, and we limit their speed to 4 knots in green zones around Magnetic Island to protect sensitive areas.
Our Jet Skis do not drop anchors in green zones.
Jet Skis do not require antifouling paints, which can harm marine ecosystems.
The Jet Ski office is powered by a battery.
The Jet Ski storage shed is powered by solar.
We choose to use only biodegradable products that are safe for marine applications.
We support island organisations such as the Magnetic Island Network for Turtles and the Magnetic Island Koala Hospital by collecting recyclable bottles and donating through ChangeIt and participating in events such as koala releases.
Offering Quality Interpretation and Educating Guests:
Each of our tours is guided by knowledgeable staff who provide in-depth commentary on the environmental, cultural, and historical aspects of Magnetic Island and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. We emphasize the importance of conservation and educate guests on actions they can take to protect these areas for future generations.
Supporting and Engaging Our Local Community:
We actively collaborate with local organisations and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) to protect and preserve the region. We participate in GBRMPA’s "Eye on the Reef" program, using their app which allows us to document notable marine sightings, contributing to broader conservation efforts.
We support local island organisations such as the Magnetic Island Koala Hospital and the Magnetic Island Network for Turtles. Our contributions include donating through Containers for Change (by collecting and recycling bottles left in the office), participating in koala releases, and participating and promoting Clean Up days. Additionally, we educate our customers on responsible behaviour around wildlife and suggest small changes they can make to help protect these endangered animals.
Reducing Our Carbon Footprint:
We continuously assess and refine our operations to minimise our environmental impact, ensuring our practices are as sustainable as possible.
Protecting Our Unique Wildlife and Endangered Species:
Our tours are conducted with great respect for the local wildlife. We have a Marine Wildlife Viewing Policy which is used to train our staff and ensure we are not posing any risk to any marine animal.
Making Real Contributions to Conservation:
Minimise Impacts:
To minimise environmental impact, only six jet skis are used at a time, accommodating a maximum of ten customers and one lead guide. We actively collect and recycle rubbish found during tours or generated by customers.Contribute to the Natural Environment:
We provide fact sheets on local wildlife and appropriate behaviour around them and inform customers about environmental risks (e.g. sunscreen, plastics). We avoid areas with heightened risks, such as turtle nesting sites. We support Clean Up Days, recycle, and donate to Koala Hospital and MINT, two organisations focused on wildlife rehabilitation. We also promote and educate guests about community events, including fundraisers like those organised by Island Burger that benefit local organisations.Climate Change:
To reduce our footprint, we use eco-friendly equipment, adopt sustainable practices, manage waste effectively, and use eco-friendly products.Contribute:
We aim to minimise our impact and educate customers effectively. We also make financial contributions to MINT through our plastic collection program.Monitoring and Research:
We participate in the Eye on the Reef program and encourage our staff to engage in other Citizen Science projects. We report sightings of sick or injured wildlife and educate our customers on how they can do the same.
Helping to Preserve Australian Indigenous Cultures:
We incorporate local stories of Indigenous culture into our tours, sharing the rich heritage and traditions of the island’s traditional owners.
Providing an Unforgettable, High-Quality Guest Experience:
We strive to offer an engaging and educational experience, combining the excitement of jet skiing with a deeper appreciation of the island’s natural and historical aspects.
Our ongoing commitment to sustainable tourism ensures that the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Magnetic Island are preserved for future generations to enjoy.
